Jeanne Shope Speck, 88, died peacefully Thursday, Jan.16, 2025, at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon.
Jeanne was born April 11, 1936, the daughter of the late Veda Gifford Hazzard and Banner Shope.
She had one brother, James A. (Nancy), who preceded her in death.
Jeanne grew up in Mount Union. While in high school, as head cheerleader for the Trojans, she met the love of her life, Martin Lee Speck, who played football for the Huntingdon Bearcats. They married in 1956 and lived in Huntingdon until they moved to Ohio to be near and watch their grandsons grow in 2000.
Jeanne was a homemaker who later became a part-time teacher aide at Alfarata Elementary School. She was an avid championship golfer at Huntingdon Country Club where she always made it known she turned in a better scorecard than Lee. Jeanne and Lee spent over 20 years as Penn State season ticket holders and tailgaters extraordinaire.
Jeanne was an excellent cook and loved entertaining family and friends for many events. Her other hobbies included riding her bike and walking throughout Huntingdon with her friends and playing bridge for many years.
She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for herself and her daughter. She stitched Halloween costumes for both her grandsons for many years. She also did cross stitch, even with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. She stitched framed works for her grandsons, commemorating big events in their lives.
For many years Jeanne and Lee vacationed in Ocean City, New Jersey. This was the highlight of every summer spent chasing after her grandsons, riding bikes on the boardwalk, walking all over town and of course sun bathing on the beach with her dear friend Jean Weir.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lee. Jeanne is survived by her daughter Lee Anne Speck Stueber (Gerald, deceased), grandsons Frederick “Fritz” Gregory Stueber, Konrad “Kurt” Speck Stueber, daughter-in-law Kelia Scott Stueber and great-grandson Shepherd “Shep” Speck Stueber. Other survivors include niece Gloria Shope Griffith (David), great-niece Natalie Kalinowski Rhodes, and brother-in-law Thomas C. Speck (Mary, deceased).
Jeanne lived a fulfilled and happy life with her grandsons, being the highlight of it all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeanne’s name to the Gerald Stueber Memorial Scholarship. Checks can be made out to CFAA and sent to CFAA, 400 E. Washington St., Chagrin Falls, OH 44022.
