Denise Gutshall Obituary

Denise (Mohnal) Gutshall, 65, 10450 S. Crooked Creek Road, Huntingdon, Smithfield Township, passed away at 6:26 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at her residence in Smithfield Township.

Born Oct. 29, 1958, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas “Nick” and Dolores (Magensky) Mohnal. She was united in marriage to Daniel “Dan” Gutshall June 24, 1978, at the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church by the Rev. Timothy Swope. Her husband survives at their residence.

In addition to her husband, Denise is survived by her four children, Joseph Gutshall and wife Tricia, Huntingdon, Jason Gutshall and wife Nichole, Boalsburg, Jennifer (Gutshall) Hileman and husband Mike, Claysburg, and Justin Gutshall and wife Julie, Huntingdon, Smithfield Township; four grandchildren, Tyler Gutshall, Matthew Gutshall, Bridget Hileman and Adrianne Gutshall; two stepgrandchildren, Lucas Walter and wife Dakota and Olivia Lehimer; and one stepgreat-grandson, Greyson Walter.

She is also survived by two sisters, Elaine Porter and husband Dennis, Alexandria, and Diane Rees and husband Robert, Miamisburg, Ohio; her mother-in-law, Elizabeth “Liz” Gutshall of James Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Denise held positions with multiple area employers during her career, including cashier at the former Feagley’s Market in Smithfield, group leader at Weight Watchers, cashier at Weis Markets, personal lines at Mutual Benefit Group and its predecessor, Swigart Associates, and a pharmacy tech at Kopp Drug. She retired as a pharmacy tech from Rite Aid.

Denise was an active member of Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Huntingdon, where she was an active participant and supporter of parish activities and projects. She taught 2nd grade religious education for over 30 years, served as eucharistic minister and was a member of the ladies alter society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a lifetime member of the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Co. and Auxiliary, having worked at many of the fire company’s banquets, dinners and fundraising events over the years. She continued to support the organization after her illness by baking cakes for various functions. She enjoyed listening to music on her records, watching the birds from her back porch and watching and cheering on her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.

Denise loved taking her family trips to her favorite beach in Ocean City, Maryland, attending and supporting her grandchildren’s various school activities and sporting events. Her family and her church were the most important things to her. She always looked forward to her weekly Sunday visits and dinner with her children and grandchildren.

Denise was a 1976 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School.

She was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County and had lived at her Smithfield Township address since 1992.

Family and friends are invited to a vigil at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Cutright Funeral Homes — Smithfield Chapel, 313 Fairgrounds Road, Huntingdon.

A viewing and visitation will follow from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A visitation will also be held from 10-11 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Sixth and Washington streets, Huntingdon. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday immediately following the visitation with the Rev. Father Mark Reid officiating. Committal will be made in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Huntingdon.
