Dale Douglas “Popeye” Grissinger, 76, 5955 Hartman Court, Huntingdon, died at 6:04 p.m. Nov. 29, 2023, at his residence in Walker Township.

Born Dec. 17, 1946, in Mapleton, he was the son of the late Webster and Catherine (Thomas) Grissinger. He married Dolly Marlene Kyper May 28, 1971, in McConnellstown. Mrs. Kyper survives at their residence.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Christine Grose and her husband Ray, Mount Airy, Maryland, Benjamin Grissinger and his wife Kelley, Alexandria, Jody Mason and her fiancé Dave Cahn, Frankford, Delaware, and Alyson Ondesko and her husband David, Harrisburg; nine grandchildren, Lindsay Stone and her husband Randy, Alexandria, Virginia, Lauren Grose and her husband Sean Buskey, Aberdeen, Maryland, Douglas Grissinger and his wife Randi, Altoona, Benjamin Richard Grissinger, Pittsburgh, Brett Grissinger, Alexandria, Trent Grissinger, Alexandria, Matthew Grissinger, Alexandria, Theodore Ondesko, Harrisburg, Andrew Dale Ondesko, and Harrisburg.

Also surviving are a sister, Janet Walter and her husband Robert of Mapleton, and a sister-n-law, Penny Grissinger of Huntingdon.

He was preceded in death by three siblings, an infant brother Malcolm Grissinger, Evan Grissinger and Warner Grissinger and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Grissinger.

He retired in 2008 after working for many years as a laborer for Mead Westvaco in Alexandria. He also worked for Hickes Associates prior to Mead Westvaco.

Dale was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of the William P. Spyker American Legion Post 520, Alexandria. He enjoyed hunting, collecting coins and gardening. His biggest hobbies included “ancestry” and the fantastic job he did with his woodworkings. Dale was a volunteer for the retired and senior volunteer program (RSVP) of Blair and Huntingdon County and 2017 Spirit of Volunteerism Award Winner.

Dale graduated from Southern Huntingdon County High School with the class of 1965.

He served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1974 aboard the USS Hancock as a flight director.

He was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County and had lived at his Walker Township residence since 2003.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Cutright Funeral Homes — Smithfield Chapel, 313 Fairgrounds Road, Huntingdon. Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home at 2 p.m.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Private interment will take place in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon.
